The Next New Thing

Suggesting a new type of "new media" that does not currently exist is difficult for me particularly because I'm no Ray Kurzweil. I feel like everything has been done already.

Regardless, I would make a site where people could play a game that is actually a simulation of certain aspects of society and whose purpose is to let regular people attempt to solve pressing social issues. For instance, someone could play a simulation where they come up with a way to provide drinkable water at lowest cost to people in areas where it is difficult to get clean water. Or a simulation where people come up with cost effective, both financially and ecologically, ways to get rid of garbage.

The game itself would look cartoonish and would have fun sounds and cute little characters including an assistant who informs the user of certain crisises that the user's actions have caused and that need to be fixed. The game would be enthralling enough that players would just think they are playing a really fun game but informative enough that the data collected is realistic and useful. The best performing players' simulations can then be used by governments or municipalities to solve actual problems.

  1. Great idea! Yeah, we all can't be futurists and scientists but your idea is pretty good.

Your idea actually made me recall a flash game I played some time ago. Given your thought process, this is along similar lines. You play as someone who has an intensely strict budget and you have to make it through the month. It's harder than it sounds.

  2. Interesting Idea! With a game like that, I think a lot of problems can be solved. Like training new doctors. For example,in your game med students would get hands on experience in attempting and dealing with surgeries and patients. It could present ground breaking teaching strategies saving time, money, and human capitol.

  3. I think this is a brilliant idea. It is simple and also very cost effective. I feel it would be well utilized in the education industry where children from a young age, can be trained to think about prevalent social issues and how they can help combat these in the future. This can help kids be socially aware of whats going wrong and how we can help by finding alternative solutions for it

  4. This is such a positive idea to help nurture our youth to becoming involved and aware citizens. Games that are available now create a false sense of manhood, sexualize women, and permit violence in ways that some just don't understand will have an impact on those who play it. Creating games with messages that are actually important is what should be happening. Games should help inspire the next generation to be beneficial to society, and inspire change for the good. They should be more aware of climatic, social, and global issues. I don't think that it would work to the point where they would actually have their ideas used to create change. It may help inspire it, but issues are not so black and white that they may be solved through a game. This is a lovely idea, and I hope that many contribute to inspiring our youth to become better.
